Puppy Training and Socialisation Classes

Our Puppy Classes are for puppies aged under 5 months (20 weeks) at the beginning of the course.

The classes are held at either 6.00 pm or 7.15 pm on a Monday evening, we add additional courses on other evenings as numbers allow. We have new courses starting every 4 weeks at the beginning of every month, in rotation.

The puppy courses includes a series of 8 sessions taught over 8 weeks, advice and support as well as a copy of our Puppy Plus Training and Socialisation Handbook.

Our puppy classes have been planned and refined using the most up to date knowledge of puppies social and emotional development, as well as a thorough understanding of how our puppies learn. Our handbook has been devised with information taken from a range of sources including Jane Killion’s Puppy Culture program, Helen Zulch’s Life skills for puppies, Puppy Lab from the School of Canine Science, as well as from our own comprehensive experiences. Our Handbook is revised regularly as new information is discovered.

Our classes include the teaching of key skills which include; teaching puppies to enjoy being handled, to listen and be able to follow our instructions (cues), to cope with frustration, to have good manners as well as teaching puppies to be calm. We also carry out lots of activities that promote confidence and resilience, teaching puppies to be able to bounce back from being startled or frightened.

We teach a range of behaviours including attentiveness to name, a reliable recall, loose lead walking, the positions including a sit, down and stand, a wait and leave it behaviour, a settle behaviour, as well as teaching good manners including not jumping up. We also give advise on collars and harnesses, headcollar and muzzle training.

We now incorporate the Kennel Club Good Citizen Dogs Scheme Puppy Foundation Award into our classes so puppies who complete the classes will receive their puppy foundation award as well as a Puppy Plus Certificate and Rosette.

We also incorporate use of the Canine Fitpaws equipment and free exercise into our puppy classes in order to increase confidence, sensory input and body awareness. For more information on this please see our Fitpaws Master Trainer page!

Classes are friendly, relaxed and supportive and provide vital socialisation for the puppies to a variety of adults, children and other puppies. Attending puppy classes and training your puppy can help to prevent many behavioural problems before they start. We will help you to teach your puppy to grow up into a well behaved, friendly and well-adjusted member of society. We will help to create a bond between you and your puppy that will last a lifetime!
